Kazakhstan is ahead of the trends: how the country has established digital taxation faster than others
While the whole world continues to seek a balance between regulating digital platforms and fair taxation, Kazakhstan is already acting – and with results. In the context of the rapid digitalization of the economy and global pressure on fiscal systems, the country is implementing state-of-the-art tools aimed at ensuring transparency and budget growth.
One of these measures was the digital services tax, popularly known as the "Google tax". Since 2022, this mechanism has successfully covered the income of foreign digital companies providing services to Kazakhstani users. Search engines, streaming platforms, online games, marketplaces, and other IT services fall into the taxable category.
Since its introduction, the country's budget has received more than 83 billion tenge. Moreover, thanks to this measure, more than 100 foreign digital companies have officially registered in Kazakhstan. They provide services in a wide range of fields, from entertainment content to business infrastructure and online tourism.
Against the background of global discussions about fair taxation of digital giants, Kazakhstan demonstrates a practical example of how to innovate without waiting for consensus in the international arena. This is a step not only towards digital sovereignty, but also towards strengthening economic sustainability in the context of global transformation.
